Consent, by its very nature, cannot be compelled by law enforcement. They can’t make you submit to a search without a warrant or probable cause with other circumstances that surround it. If you’re approached by a police officer and they request to search your vehicle, you are completely within your rights to tell them, “No thank you.” At that point you can consult with an attorney or they can go get a warrant if they have probable cause to believe there’s something going on inside the vehicle. However, at the end of the day, the bottom line is that you do not have to consent to a search of any kind.
