In Florida, self defense is an affirmative defense where, essentially, the person admits to having done whatever it is they’re accused of, whether it be a battery or an assault or what have you, but they say that, “I did it, because I was defending myself,” or, “I was defending some other person.” Self defense can be used if you use an appropriate level of force against a threat that society would recognize as reasonable. So if you perceive a threat, and society would say that that’s a reasonable threat, then you would be authorized to use the same level of force to defend yourself from that threat.
