In Florida, child support is determined according to what it costs the guidelines. The guidelines are set forth in the statutes that basically set up a math problem for the courts to follow when they’re awarding the amounts of child support. Part of the things that are important in this math problem are basically the percentage of the amount of time that the child has spent with either parent during the marriage, the percentage of the amount of money that either parent has contributed to the marriage as well as the amount of time that the spouses are going to be spending with the children or proposed to spend with the children after the marriage is over. Ultimately all of these things come together and there is a guideline amount that is set by statute. It’s very difficult to come up with a different number without a lot of justification for the courts.
