Expungement or expunction as we call it is the physical destruction of a criminal history record, whether it be an arrest or a court case that was brought against you. After the order comes down for expungement, then the agencies, the arresting agency and any of the law enforcement agencies that have either physical records, paper records, or electronic versions of these records are required to destroy them. The clerk of courts as well is also required to destroy the records. They will maintain however an indication in the file that there was a record and that it has been expunged. However at that point, no one will have access to the record itself.
